You walk into a room and everyone is gathered into small clusters.
Do you show up with a purpose ready to make things happen? Do others look for you and motion for you to join them? Or, do you head for the buffet line, search aimlessly for a friend before retreating to the restroom? If you manage to collect a few cards do they end up on the stack on your desk? What do you do if you are in transition, looking for a new job or just starting your business? Are you confident and comfortable or are you smiling on the outside trying to "fake it until you make it?"
Do you...
- Dread going to business mixers because you feel uncomfortable?
- Feel anxious when talking to strangers?
- Get intimidated with you walk into a room and everyone is in clusters?
- Know what to say when you are "between jobs"
- Know how to avoid the networking "NO NO's" and "Business Card Blunders?"
- Have a great introduction or do you just wing it?
- Wonder what others think about the way you present yourself?
If networking makes you anxious, you're not alone.
I've been there too. If you know my story you know that I worked in a factory for over 21 years and then literally JUMPED out into the business world and tried to "Network."
The best advice I ever got was this: "If you want to become a national speaker you have to learn how to network." So off I went to my first national convention. Once I got there I was so intimidated. Looking back, I didn't even know how to dress! I made sooooo many business card blunders, introduction errors and what I refer to as Networking No No's!
I had good intentions and even when I got better at networking basics, there were more problems. I didn't know how to introduce myself, I didn't know how to advance my business through networking, I didn't understand how to prepare or how to "connect the dots," but most of all I simply didn't enjoy it. I wasn't having any fun because I was so self-conscious. Since that time I've discovered a secret.
There is lots of DRAMA around the concept of networking.
Almost everyone feels insecure in some way. Here's another secret: If you aren't feeling a little uneasy you probably aren't growing. One more thing I've learned is that those who THINK they are great are usually commit at least one of the big Networking NO NO's! If they only knew how everyone else perceived them! It's like the guy who thinks he's the life of the party and while he's dancing on tables with a lampshade on his head everyone else is either rolling their eyes or leaving the party! Networking skills are not something you are just born with. You have to learn skills and strategies and THEN it becomes comfortable, easy and profitable!
What if you could...
- Feel confident at business to business events
- Talk to anyone anywhere any time
- Become known as the "resource" person
- Introduce yourself with so much impact, others flock to you
- Follow up with ease instead of sounding like a used car salesman
- Work through your chamber, club or association to build your network
- Expand your resources each time you attend a business function
